The Mexican government is very interested in promoting
tourism and has taken several measures to help insure that their guests have only good experiences and memories of their visits.
However, it seems that “mordida” has always plagued visitors in Mexico since the beginning of time.
Normally, after the police officer has pulled you over for some law he insists you violated, he will tell you that
you must follow him to court. He will then inform you that the judge will determine the amount of your
fine or maybe put you in jail. However, a few moments later the nice officer will offer
the other option—just pay him a certain amount of cash and he will take care of it for you! Anyone
who has ever driven in Mexico has experienced such a “shake down” from a traffic cop or knows of someone who has.
Sindicatura is a Mexican organization that was formed to fight corruption and has been very successful in doing so.
Almost every major city in Mexico has Sindicatura representation and solicits reports
of any corrupttion with a promise
to investigate all reports. Many investigations result in termination of employment.
